Managing Family Complexity

When everyone depends on you, who do you depend on?

You're managing more than your own finances. Your parents are aging. Your kids are launching. Your career is evolving. We help families like yours orchestrate the full picture, so nothing falls through the cracks.

The Reality

It's not just retirement planning.
It's family planning.

Your parents need help navigating their own financial decisions. Your kids are approaching college and the 529 plan you started feels insufficient. Your career is advancing and the tax complexity is growing. Your spouse has their own inheritance considerations.

Each of these is manageable on its own. Together, they require orchestration.

What we Actually Do

We see the whole board.

Multi-generational planning that coordinates your needs with your parents' needs and your children's futures.

Education funding strategies that don't compromise your own retirement.

Tax planning for growing complexity including stock compensation, rental income, and inheritance.

Family financial conversations facilitated with care, whether that's talking to parents about their estate plan or teaching adult children about wealth.

“I switched to them as my Dad had been with Tilson for many years and always spoke highly of them. I’m very happy.”

Who this is for.

You're in the middle of everything: building your career, raising kids, and beginning to support aging parents. The financial picture is getting more complicated every year, and you want an advisor who can see all the moving pieces, not just your investment portfolio.

THE TILSON DIFFERENCE

A family firm that understands family complexity.

We're a family-led firm with a multi-generational team. We don't just understand family complexity in theory. We live it. That perspective shapes how we plan, how we communicate, and how we show up for the families we serve.

Questions families ask us about choosing an advisor.

Yes. Tilson is an SEC Registered Investment Adviser and acts as a fiduciary for every client. That means we are required to act in your best interest, disclose conflicts, and put your outcome ahead of the firm's. You can review our registration and Form ADV on the SEC's public adviser database.

Fee-only advisors charge a stated fee for planning, investment management, or both, paid by you and disclosed in writing. There are no commissions and no product incentives. Tilson's fee schedule is published in our Form ADV Part 2A, and we walk through it in the first conversation before anyone commits to anything.

In practice the terms overlap. "Financial advisor" is the broad label for anyone who advises on money, including brokers and insurance agents. "Financial planner" usually signals a planning-first approach, and CFP® professionals have met specific education, exam, and ethics standards to use that mark. Ask what the person actually does, how they are paid, and what standard they work under.

Either can work. Many families prefer an advisor nearby so meetings can happen in person and someone local understands the state's tax and estate landscape. Others work with advisors across the country by video. Tilson does both: most of the families we work with are in New Jersey, and a growing number are not. What matters more than distance is whether the advisor is a fiduciary, how they are paid, and whether a person picks up when you call.

The CFP® professional builds and maintains the overall plan. The CPA looks at every decision inside it, from withdrawals and conversions to charitable gifts and a business sale, with the tax return in view. At Tilson both sit on the same advisory team, so the planning and the tax work happen together, year-round, rather than in separate offices at separate times.

This is general information, not personalized advice.
