Navigating loss

You don't have to figure this out alone.

Losing a loved one changes everything, including your financial life. We've walked this path with many families, and we move at your pace. No pressure. No deadlines. Just a steady hand.

The Reality

Everything just changed.

Suddenly you're managing decisions you never made, accounts you never touched, and responsibilities that feel overwhelming. People are asking you to make choices about insurance, estate paperwork, income, and investments at a time when getting through the day takes everything you have.

Here's what we want you to know: there's no rush. And you're not supposed to already know this.

How We Help

We meet you where
you are.

Triage the urgent from the important. Some things need attention now. Most can wait. We help you tell the difference.

Coordinate with your other advisors. Estate attorneys, CPAs, insurance contacts. We help connect the pieces.

Explain everything as many times as needed. No jargon. No judgment. No assumption that you should already understand.

Build a new financial picture. Income, expenses, benefits, accounts, estate changes. We help you see the full picture so you can make decisions with clarity.

Who this is for.

You've recently lost a loved one and you're facing financial decisions that feel unfamiliar. Maybe your partner handled the finances. Maybe you handled them together but the landscape has changed. Either way, you want someone patient who won't make you feel rushed or overwhelmed.

THE TILSON DIFFERENCE

When we say we show up, we mean it.

This is where our firm's values aren't just words on a wall. When clients experience loss, we step in. We call. We check in. We handle the details that other firms leave to back-office paperwork. Because this isn't a financial transaction. It's a family going through the hardest thing they've faced.

You're not alone in this.

Questions families ask us about choosing an advisor.

Yes. Tilson is an SEC Registered Investment Adviser and acts as a fiduciary for every client. That means we are required to act in your best interest, disclose conflicts, and put your outcome ahead of the firm's. You can review our registration and Form ADV on the SEC's public adviser database.

Fee-only advisors charge a stated fee for planning, investment management, or both, paid by you and disclosed in writing. There are no commissions and no product incentives. Tilson's fee schedule is published in our Form ADV Part 2A, and we walk through it in the first conversation before anyone commits to anything.

In practice the terms overlap. "Financial advisor" is the broad label for anyone who advises on money, including brokers and insurance agents. "Financial planner" usually signals a planning-first approach, and CFP® professionals have met specific education, exam, and ethics standards to use that mark. Ask what the person actually does, how they are paid, and what standard they work under.

Either can work. Many families prefer an advisor nearby so meetings can happen in person and someone local understands the state's tax and estate landscape. Others work with advisors across the country by video. Tilson does both: most of the families we work with are in New Jersey, and a growing number are not. What matters more than distance is whether the advisor is a fiduciary, how they are paid, and whether a person picks up when you call.

The CFP® professional builds and maintains the overall plan. The CPA looks at every decision inside it, from withdrawals and conversions to charitable gifts and a business sale, with the tax return in view. At Tilson both sit on the same advisory team, so the planning and the tax work happen together, year-round, rather than in separate offices at separate times.

This is general information, not personalized advice.
